4WD Travel and Adventure in the Kootenays

It's been a while since we've been on the road, camera in hand, looking for new places to explore, experience, and enjoy. So next week 4WD Traveller is officially on the road, looking for a taste of early summer 4WD travel adventure.

For this trip we're heading across Southern British Columbia into the Kootenay region to explore the Purcell Mountains by 4x4. Much of this trip will be on road, but whenever possible we'll head into the bush and try to get to our destination using back roads and 4x4 trails as well.

While the main goal of this trip is to experience the natural beauty and local hospitality of the Kootenay region, another goal is energy conservation. We hope to demonstrate that overland 4x4 adventure travel doesn't have to be uneconomical. So during this trip we'll be practising a few hypermiling techniques and keeping detailed fuel economy records.

Our ride for this trip is the recently reviewed 5 door, 5 speed Suzuki Vitara 4x4 powered by the economical 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine. This vehicle has returned impressive fuel economy for us on the trail, so we're eager to see what it will do on the highways as well.
